Ah! I can't believe that I'm 34 weeks and 4 days today!
We had a preterm labour scare last Wednesday (a day before Christmas eve) when I awoke from my afternoon nap to painful period-like pains and a lower backache that shot down my right leg. My thighs also started to shiver and my teeth was chattering...I thought I could wait it out to see if it would go away but the pain started intensifying!
I immediately opened my room door to see if anyone was at home with me and luckily...my father-in-law was. He had heard my door opening and thought I wanted something from downstairs (I've been upstairs-bound since 2 weeks ago, just to minimise the walking) so he walked upstairs...and at the sight of him..I started crying! It was a mixture of discomfort and fear as I worried about the babies coming too soon...
Somehow the pain went away and I was able to tell him that I needed to go to the hospital...he helped me to the room and I made a call to my hubs...who immediately said that he would rush back. I also called my sister to see if this was what they called contractions. At first, she sounded worried but later she asked if the shivering was because I was scared! No way Jose!
I rested in bed while I waited for my hubs and the pain came back in about 15 mins! I was rolling around on bed when my husband rushed in and he was all frantic and tried calling the clinic we went to, to ask if we were to head to the hospital right away. Things were a little complicated because just a day before, we had switched to a new doctor who is attached to another hospital -- we had never been to the hospital to register before.
After getting the greenlight from the nurse (we were contemplating on going to a hospital that was nearer), my hubs whisked my hospital documents, our cord blood banking sets and me and we were off.
We ended up staying at the hospital for 2 nights...and it was indeed preterm contractions I had! The doc put me on Ventolin, a medicine commonly used for asthma, which is known to stop contractions. I guess I was feeling all better once I had the medical team around me...the contractions didn't come back after I was admitted for about an hour...
All in all it was a reassuring stay at the hospital as the nurses would come every 3 hours to check on the babies' heartbeats. The twin on my left, Twin 2 as they call him, seems to be the naughtier one as the nurses could never track his heartbeat for longer than a few seconds on the non-stress test machine. He was probably squirming about and doing little somersaults in there!
I'm really glad we checked into the hospital and that it was to be a two-day holiday after that...my hubs stayed with my all through out and slept on the pull-out seat next to my bed.
And I'm so glad we switched to this new doc! He came to see us all three days eventhough it was Christmas...with our previous doctor...I never really felt like I was treated as a high-risk pregnancy case. But this doctor, he was all nice and understanding and hinted that we'd try to stretch the pregnancy out for as long as possible but that he suspects that I may not last that long....
Ok my hubs just walked in and he said the main message is: it's never too late to change your gynae! :)
Oh just to backtrack a little, we did our IVF with a different doctor who no longer accepted deliveries, so we had to find a gynae on our own. We arrived at the second gynae through a friend's recommendation, because she did her IVF and had twins with him. We were fine with him for the first few visits...and it did help that the hospital was quite near to where we stayed and there was zero-waiting time with him.
My distrust with him began when I asked if he could write me an MC for when I was about 30 weeks pregnant so that I could bedrest at home. He wasn't keen on that at all and seemed to dismiss my need for resting. He said, perhaps he could let me rest from 32 weeks onwards..which was fair enough. But he said so very reluctantly...and kept saying that he didn't see the need for me to rest at home at all that early...which made me think he didn't really treat me as high risk at all.
Well we stuck with him for a bit more. Later we asked about having skin-to-skin contact to encourage breastfeeding and again he didn't seem keen on the idea and somehow his replies always made us feel like we had asked a stupid question!
Luckily I had a chat with my hubs a couple of weeks back and told him that I actually didn't cared much for this gynae and would not go back to him after our delivery...little did I know that my hubs didn't say anything only because he thought I was fine with the gynae!
So we asked around on forums for recommendations for new gynaes and if it was ok to change one so late...we ended up going for a gynae whom our IVF doctor had recommended in the first place :)
Oh and we had one last appointment with our second gynae since it was already scheduled..and that sealed the deal that he wasn't the one for us...we again reminded him to write me the MC since I was already 33 weeks (I mentioned that we'll be picking up the MC in our next appointment when we saw him at 30 weeks)...and he just gave us a horrified look...and he said that he can't ever BACKDATE an MC.....
So I reminded him gently and said at the last appointment you said we could pick it up today...and he said yeah I could write you an MC from today onwards but not from last week...So I started turning a little red and angry and said: then you should've given us the MC at our last appointment...and you know what he said? "Oh, but how can I give you an MC that is in the future?"
I mean...he really does not understand what giving out MCs for third trimester pregnancies are for. He seems to think that I'd have to be hospitalised and in pain before he can issue an MC!
So I turned a little redder and he reluctantly gave in and said ok fine...I will write the date as when you started your 32nd week..no one will have to know about it...(see how easily it can be done?)
Then after that he had to add: "But if your boss tears the MC up..I can't help you with it..."
I mean...who was he to decide for me? He was supposed to be on my side anyway!
This episode really showed what kind of person/gynae/doctor he was -- it really wasn't about getting the MC that I was pissed about...but it really speaks of how he treated women and pregnancy and safety! Oh and after reluctantly issuing us the MC, he went on to warn us about going into preterm labour...he said: Anytime you have any pain just come right into emergency...
By saying that...doesn't he mean that I'm at risk of going into preterm labour anytime soon and he still does not want to let me rest and prevent all that? Geeze.
He also prescribed us with two Dexa jabs to mature the babies lungs, and told us to get it that weekend. From what I know....a lot of twin mummies get that jab at 28 weeks....and here I was at 33 weeks and no jabs yet...
Luckily, we saw our new gynae about 3 days later and asked him about it...he immediately told us to take the jab, which we did! Imagined if we hadn't and had gone into preterm labour the next day and delivered!
Hmph.
I'm so glad that we no longer have to see our second gynae...I didn't know I was dreading his visits so much. We have our appointment coming up tomorrow with our new gynae and I'm actually excited! Which should be the way when it comes to pregnancy check-ups!
I originally wanted to write this post to list down what I've been eating daily but I guess I'll do that in the next post!
Adios!

Out of batteries
I'm almost 15 weeks!
I must admit that I forgot to update this blog a little...and now I have some time because my car just wouldn't start (my guess would be a faulty battery) and I'm stuck in the office till the hubs come and pick me up. Which may take another hour or more, looking at the jam outside.
The good thing is that my super hunger pangs have since slowed down a little...so I think I can last a bit longer without food.
By the way, my taste for tomatoes and red chillies have returned! So I can finally go back to cooking my own dinner/supper and not feel like I don't want to eat it afterwards. Was craving for lupcheong chicken rice last night, and wanted to head home to cook it with some french beans. All I had though was rice and lupcheong, so that was what I had :) Yummy nevertheless!
In about 2 weeks, we'll get to take a first peek to see the babies' genders! That's something that me and the hubs is really looking forward to. We're still arguing over names, so having the genders confirmed will definitely help!
Anyways, I hope to write more soon!
XOXO

Getting toasty
So I've been thinking about insurance today and chanced upon this one for pregnant ladies.
It says coverage for your infant from as early as 18 weeks into the pregnancy. Sounds good! Not too late and not too early. Just hope it fits into my budget (since there'll probably be a surcharge for twins).
Contacted an agent and will probably meet up with her next week.
On the other front, I'm thinking of cooking mapo tofu again tonight. Dinner is the hardest time of the day for me -- I have to plan for two meals, and most of the time, I don't feel like eating much but hunger gets the better of me.
I'm really thankful that my MIL has been cooking dinner these days. Healthy meals with healthy nourishing soup. But my tastebuds tend to go a bit awry at night so they end up tasting bland and I almost always have to force my dinners down.
I've decided that for my 11pm meals, I'll try toast with a little cheese. Let's see if that will work for now.

Veggie no more
Nine weeks today!
The hunger and indigestion/nausea feeling is definitely still here.
Woke up thinking that I could try and be healthy and cook my own vegetable soup - with a carrot, celery, tomato and onion - but boy, was I wrong. I cracked an egg into my bowl of soup (didnt think that that would be considered undercooked eggs), took a spoonful and yelch! It was the most disgusting thing I've ever tasted.
During the 2ww, vegetable soup was all I felt good eating but now I can't stand the thought of it! Somehow the chicken stock powder I added had a bitter twang to it...or maybe it's just my upgraded (downgraded?) tastebuds.
I'm not liking any greens and tomatoes are an absolute no no. I used to eat tomatoes like all day! Anything savoury but sweet seems to irk me too, like today's chicken teriyaki lunch. God knows I go wayyyyy back with teriyaki chicken.
Lucky for me, these Japanese salt lemon candy have been oh-so soothing whenever I felt the bile well up in my throat. My sis got em online and they are lifesavers!

Pregnancy must-haves
If you google "pregnancy must-haves", you'll find lots of suggestions from pregnant ladies everywhere.
So here's my list of pregnancy must-haves for the first trimester.
1. Big U pregnancy pillow - just ordered this from Lazada. I hope it's as comfy as they say! I've been having this backache whenever I go shopping or walk for too long. The miracle pillow is supposed to help.
2. Extra virgin coconut oil - my friend who had her daughter over a year ago swears by this. Finally found a bottle in Jaya Grocer. Lathered it all over and yes, the hubs says it smells like rendang.
3. Larger tights - I've been loving the versatile black tights from Uniqlo but had to go from M to L since last week. Was going to invest in more when I chanced upon this neat rubberband maternity trick. Tried it out today on my jeans and it worked beautifully :)
4. Comfortable wireless bra - for when the nights are squishy times for your bosom. I've been wearing one that actually has wires, but is a sort of T-shirt bra that is super comfy.
5. Gas/gastric medicine - we don't have Tums here but anything else will just do. I tend to get this heartburny feeling whenever I eat red chillies. But I can't do without them or I won't feel like eating my meal.
6. Soft gel ice pack - for when the headaches strike! I bought this nice gel-like one that never freezes from Guardian a while back and it works like a dream. Bought another one so I can sleep on one and have another on my forehead.
7. Various snacks - salty chips, gerkins, salsa, kimchi, candy, lollipops -- just throw 'em in the trolley. Half of those things I've stopped eating but hey, I may like em later. This is for when the nausea
8. Soda crackers + air tight box - I've been eating a sugary soda cracker the first thing I wake up. I don't know if it helps with the nausea as I still do get a bit queasy later on but it sure is easy to munch on. I put them in a snap tight box beside my bed.
9. Babycentre app - like this one. It alerts me week by week. Just told me yesterday that I'm 8 weeks! And tells me what's happening to my babies. Loads of tips included too. Sure beats reading the What to Expect book.
10. Canned soup - the powdered packet ones just aren't the same. Sure soothes the salty cravings at night. The hubs is preparing a cream of chicken soup for me as we speak. Ugh. I'm feeling a little sick now.
Will update the list if I can think of anything else! Oh and this is another must-have:
11. Flat shoes - I've been wearing my Tiamo brogues for the longest time and they are perfect for pregnant ladies. Super comfy and doesn't trip me over and matches well with absolutely everything.
New update at 15 weeks: More must-haves!
12. Bra extender - I got these fabulous bra extender hooks from here for just RM1.50! I am not a fan of shopping for bras, so having these are great! I reckon I can still wear my current bra perhaps till delivery time...(or is that wishful thinking?)
13. Salt lemon candy - Super life savers! I popped one into my mouth each time I felt like puking and it works like a charm. You can get them here.

Tofu, lounge pants and Little Miss Princess
Oh and today we went grocery shopping to buy even more food.
Awhile back I cleverly bought a box of dashi miso paste. After one meal, I decided I couldn't stand the taste of it. I seem to have developed an aversion to cooking my usual foods. So the agenda today was to get ingredients that I could stomach.
So I came home with:
Msg-free chicken stock - to make chicken soup noodles
Crispy spicy prawn sambal - to make aglio olio
Mince pork - for mapo tofu which I had been craving, and also for porridge if that's all I feel like
Campbell's chicken and vegetable soup + chicken soup - for the 11pm hunger pangs (thank God I bought these as the hubs forgot to buy the mashed potato for me again!)
Grapefruit - citrusy fruits suppose to make me feel better
Orange juice - ditto
Tofu - for said mapo tofu, though I wish they had the japanese mapo tofu box spice that I wanted to try
Mango salsa - salsa! Have been craving for something tangy to dip my chips in
Kellogg's cereal bars - for in-between snacks at work
Snickers - as above
Waffles - for breakfast! Have been having trouble finding breakfast food that I feel like eating
I've cut out milk products for now as they give me diarrhea and bloating almost immediately. Even a cup of soup in a packet, creamy mushroom, doubles up my stomach size.
Oh and I'd love to share that I bought myself L sized Moomin lounge pants from Uniqlo! They are super comfy -- have been eyeing them for a while and even told my mom that she could get a few for me for my birthday. There was a sale today so I just got two pairs on my own. Super love how they look and feel! Think they should last till the second trimester at least. Mom said to buy XL, but I'd better not.
Also bought a book: Toxic Chilhood: How the modern world is damaging our children and what we can do about it. Definitely looked more interesting than the What to Expect when you're Expecting books which keep telling me about my pregnancy, when I'd really love to know how to prepare for my babies' first year.
Also bought a Little Miss Princess book. Couldn't resist as it was too cute! Think I'll get a box set when the kids come along :)

Let's talk about food
Lately, I've been eating a lot.
And I mean A LOT.
Like yesterday.
For breakfast at eight, a few crackers and milo. Had a nap, woke up and had a slice of bread with honey. Then felt immense hunger around 12 and had Ipoh kuey teow soup at Pappa Rich. Two hours later, it was satay -- five sticks of chicken and five of beef. Had to chew some gum to get the onions out of my breath. It left an ickier taste than usual. We walked for a bit then we stopped at Bing's, this new Korean dessert place, and I ordered a Sakura waffle set. It wasn't too big, but it was fulfilling. The hubs had a tall glass of ginseng honey milk (don't ask) and a mango pineapple bingsu parfait which tasted super yummy (I was only allowed a few spoonfuls).
For dinner, it was spicy basil and chicken spaghetti from Black Canyon. Was craving for KFC's mashed potato but the hubs conveniently forgot to buy any for me -- he said it had a lot of msg. So he cut up some fruits instead. Apples, a donut peach and a persimmon. After a few slices of the apple, I started to feel bloated so I had some nacho chips. I'm such a glutton!
But it was a good day for food.

Revisiting the two week wait
I said I would return to talk about my two week wait, and I have!
So my FET happened on May 20th. Because the house next door was in the midst of being renovated, we decided to rent a service suite for two weeks so I could rest better. We found one with a kitchen and also washer/dryer, and at a decent rate. We moved in the night before so that I could just rest right after the transfer.
I remember wearing my new Miffy children's T that I bought from Uniqlo over the weekend. It has a big cute Miffy bunny down the front, to symbolise the cute baby I hoped to have soon.
So all went well (despite the ultra-difficult task of holding my pee in after the procedure!).
We went hope and the next few days were bliss, as the hubs also took some time off to spend with me at the suite. Because I had to wake up like clockwork to take my pills and also insert the icky Cyclogest pills, we would wake up by eight every morn and stroll down for breakfast (free with the room). The selections were meh, but also because I couldn't eat the sausages, cold cuts or fruits.
I spent most of my time watching depressing Japanese movies online (check out Nobody Knows, you'll cry buckets!) but it was fun! When the hubs went to work, I basically filled up most of the time cooking lunch and dinner. I also crocheted a bit, but was a bit too tired for much.
It was towards the middle of the two week wait that I thought I felt a bit nauseous, but thinking back, it was probably a bit too early for that. Phantom pregnancy symptoms at work!
I did get a bit worried when the nausea went off and I didn't see any signs of spotting at all.
But lo and behold, it was a Saturday (May 30th) when we went back home for a while to pack some more stuff, and there were bits of spotting. Very light, almost non-existent, but a brown spot nevertheless. I told the hubs and he started grinning from ear to ear.
We immediately went to a pharmacy and the hubs told the cashier to hand him five packs of pregnancy tests (to which the cashier said: Wah, so excited?).
I waited till the next morning to test. Woke up bright and early and just did it. I was a bit nervous when I saw the control line first, and no sign of the other line. But a minute later I looked back and there it was! Staring back at me! My first ever double line! I hobbled over to the hubs and shook him awake. I thought he would still be groggy but he gave me a big smile and we both prayed a little.
I tested in the morning the next few days just for fun (always wanted to do that!). The double lines didn't really get darker -- they were about the same.
Ooh and a few days prior to this I did feel some tugging in my tummy, kinda like tugging cramps.
And so we did the beta test on June 2nd and we got THE NEWS!
Still can't believe it's been more than a month since then :)
I really enjoyed my two week break at the service suite and wished we could've stayed longer. Perhaps we'll do that when it's closer to the time I deliver :0

This sour taste
I'm seven and a half weeks pregnant today!
I'm still on my Progynova pills (three times a day) and Cyclogest pessaries (twice a day). Oh and a proluton jab every three days. Yesterday I visited a normal GP for my jab and she told me that I should try taking apple cider vinegar first thing in the morning. That that would cure the sour stomach feeling I've been having all day.
Well I tried it this morning, added a little manuka honey and I must say, IT DID NOT WORK. In fact, I feel even more nauseous today! Had a small packet of nasi lemak (been craving it for days) and felt much better :)
I'm now trying to find a "cure" for this sour taste that I have in my mouth, which persists all day. It's not even noon but I feel like crawling back into bed already.
Thank God I'm off tomorrow! It'll be our first scan for heartbeats at the doctor's :)

Pregnant!
I haven't been here in three months!
Apart from keeping busy to pass the days quickly (after finding out that I had to wait two more months to do a FET instead of a fresh transfer, I was a little disappointed and a little down), I was literally up to my neck with work and clearing up some personal projects.
But I have good news! I am now 6 weeks pregnant! It still feels surreal ....
Let me do a quick recap:
Feb 28: Egg pick-up day. It all went smoothly, despite the fact that I only dozed off after the procedure, and not during. Collected 23 eggs!
The embryologist called a few days later to say that they have successfully fertilised 6 eggs via natural IVF and 9 via ICSI. The end result though, was just 6 day-3 frozen eggs.
April 25: Back to the doctor's, all excited to start on the Frozen cycle. My period was late again that month so I was prescribed some pills to hasten the chase.
May 6: Routine check during Day-3 of period and to start on new pills to thicken the lining. Was asked to see Dr Eeson, a new partner at Sunfert. Dr Wong said it was a non-crucial check-up and that he wanted to cut down on waiting time. A good move! It felt a bit awkward since we had a failed IUI last year with Dr E, but he didn't seem to have recognised us at all :)
May 16: The day of reckoning! Today would tell us if I responded well to the treatment and if my uterine lining is thick enough to house the embryos. Test passed! Counting down the days!
May 20th: FET day! Was told to empty my bladder at 11am and start drinking 250ml of water. Did just that and was ushered into the ward at about 12pm. Had to take off everything and don an open-back hospital gown. Didnt have my glasses or phone so had no idea how time passed. The need to pee was halfway there. Perhaps there were some delays in the other surgeries -- I was only wheeled in at about 1pm. By then, my bladder was one big tight ball ready to burst. The nurse said hold it in, so I did. The procedure was quick! It felt almost like I was watching the first man landing on the moon. These words were repeated throughout: going through, going through. And I could see a white line moving through some tube; it wasn't very clear because I was as blind as a bat without my glasses. Then I sorta glimpsed two small discs being deposited onto a surface and doc said: completed. Easy peasy! The hardest part was yet to come...I had to hold my pee for another hour, as it was recommended to lie down right after the procedure. I cannot begin to tell you how difficult that was! As I had no idea how long an hour was, I had to resort to counting in the hundreds to take my mind off that gnawing discomfort down below. Thankfully, the nurses were very professional and came to the rescue just in time! I rushed to the loo and had a good long 10 minute pee. The nurse had to knock to see if I was doing ok because I was taking so long!
Oh yes, we were given the lowdown on our two best embryos before the procedure. Both were thawed the night before and survived (yippee). One retained all nine of its cells, while the other lost one cell in the battle of the frost, going from 8 cells to 7 cells (could be a boy? Haha) Doc said they were still quite good!
June 2: And so the 2ww happened and it was time for beta test day! I'll def write more about my two week wait in the next post as it was one of the funnest and most relaxing time I've ever shared with the hubs. But now, back to the test! My blood was taken at 8am. We were told to come back in an hour to see the doc. We came back and waited....each time the nurse called a name our hearts skipped a beat. 11 something it was when we got called in. Hubs lagged behind because he had to lug all my bags with him. When I entered, doc looked super serious and told me to sit down. A slightly sickening feeling welled up in my tummy. Hubby came in and sat down. Doc continued fiddling with his comp. Then turned to say: well, today we have good news! Ahhh.....a grin quickly spread on my hubby's face, which is quite a rare sight! Doc then pushed a piece of paper in front of us. 839.1 for hcg! That's super high! And here I was praying for at least 200. Doc said: we don't know how many is in there but it looks like twins! I think we were both in shock because we left the room without giving the doc a hug, which was what I always thought I'd do when the day finally came....we were both grinning like mad when we left the room, hopefully not to the chagrin of the many couples who looked very serious there that day.
And whew! It took me forever to write this recap. More good news next!

No Bak Kut Teh
Here's what happened during my second visit to Sunfert.
Feb 17 2015
A day away from Chinese New Year's eve and here I was at my second appointment with the doc. And I brought the hubs along! I was so thrilled that he managed to take the day off. Never mind that he seemed to be in a foul mood after receiving a call from the mechanic who did a crap job with his beat-up car.
I waited for a while to be called in to see the nurse, who took my blood to check on my hormone levels. I asked if it was also for a HIV test that the doc mentioned the last time, but the nurse didn't seem to know anything about it.
We got to see the doc after an hour or so I think and I was really praying in the days leading up to the appointment that there would be no cyst found in me (again). God must've heard my prayers because woohoo, I was given the all-clear to immediately start treatment for IVF. The hubs seemed thrilled at the news, and found it amusing that the nurse needed to take another sample of my blood, because they had missed out on sending it for the HIV testing that I earlier asked about. Doc joked about "having to find the same hole to poke back into." Ouch!
I wasn't too worried about that though, but I think I just got charged extra for the double blood work! Bummer.
By the way, the IVF will cost us approximately RM16.8 k. The figure would possible be raised to RM18.5k in April, when the GST kicks in. Instead of an easy payment plan that you can pay over a year, Sunfert has taken the liberty to divide the figure into the different stages leading up to the completion of the IVF programme.
This is how the division works:
Today - second day of period scan + start of FSH injections = RM2k + (not inclusive of blood tests)
Next week (23/2) - for first scan to see the response in my ovaries = RM2k +
Another scan on 25/2 - to see if we need to slow down on the injections = RM4k+
Egg retrieval possible on 28/2 = RM7k
We told doc of our desire to freeze the eggs for a frozen transfer, as I was expected to travel to Singapore from March 13 - 16, which wouldn't be ideal if I were to be pregnant then. Doc said "Well that's the trend now, to freeze all the eggs."
So off I went to see the nurse (I think I waited almost an hour) and was told to do these injections:
Today: 1 FSH injection by mixing 3 green vials of powder with 1 1/2 bottles of ampoule (water).
Tomorrow: Same but alternate to the left side of my tummy. (exact location to be found by doing a L-shape with two of my fingers from each hand, from the navel).
19/2: Same
20/2: Same
21/2: Same + one Cetrizide shot (to prevent the eggs from being released prematurely)
22/2: Same as above.
23/2: Just the Cetrizide shot and to visit the doc.
The nurse was very friendly and knowledgeable, and was a stickler with details, which I liked. I was given a print out of the payment plan, which really made things easier to chart. So much more assurance for me, knowing when I would get pregnant :)
The hubs had to deal with his grumbling tummy so he had gone off to the Chili Espresso diner on the ground floor. Another great thing about having Sunfert in a neighbourhood mall (Nexus) is that we can do everything here in one go, and not have to drive to another place for lunch/breakfast. They even have Chatime, which I have been refraining from.
Oh and Doc said I could eat anything, except Chinese herbs. Because the evil herbs are doused with some hormones or something, and that would interfere with the treatment. Not even Bak kut teh is allowed!
I told myself that it would still be okay to eat all the spicy tom yam dishes I want. But I'd definitely cut back on the sweet drinks. No cola or fizz of any kind.
It was a good second appointment, and I couldn't be happier that Chinese New Year was just around the corner. I started doing my 'count the eggs before they hatch' routine, and got myself all excited that we might just be having a sheep baby.

A little down
Today I felt a little down that I had to spend my Sunday doing some work...
And coupled with the fact that a friend, who already had a three-year-old, just announced that she was three months pregnant with her second child...
It still gets a little hard to take whenever I hear of new pregnancies resulting from natural planning...I tend to get all negative and ask yet again: Why aren't we parents yet?
Though yesterday marked the first time my eggs would've met my hubby's swimmers...we were told that we had to wait till end April before starting treatment again to prepare for the frozen embryo transfer. I guess I was still too numb from the anaesthesia to feel any disappointment.
So today...I just feel a little sad.
For dinner, I asked for fried chicken...and maybe just a pint of beer? We'll see what the hubs has in stored for us.
Wowed by Sunfert
I survived my egg retrieval, or oocyte pickup, procedure today! Yay! Well, my greatest worry was that I would be all dizzy and be overwhelmed with nausea because of the anaesthesia. But no such thing happened!
And I had 23 eggs in total! Indeed, a mother hen I am :)
Before I launch into more details, let me backtrack a bit. I suppose I would have to backtrack on every one of my upcoming posts till I catch up to the me now.
Feb 7 2015
Today was my first consultation with Dr Wong Pak Seng of the famed Sunfert Fertility Centre, newly opened at Bangsar South. Because I wanted it to be on a Saturday, I had to wait almost a month to cinch the appointment. At the last minute, the hubs had to be in Singapore for work so I dragged my older, much-more fertile sister to suss out the place.
Sunfert gave off a very pleasant first impression. High ceilings (I love high ceilings), more than enough seats for couples to cozy up on and friendly staff. In fact, they were so many seats, and comfortable sofa-like ones at that, that couples could choose to sit in their own corner and not have to worry about looking anti-social at all. I spotted a coffee station, with those one-click buttons for cappuccino/black coffee/caffe latte and noted to my self that hubby would be pleased.
The appointment was at 10 I think and we waited for about 45 mins to an hour before my number was called and we headed into one of the five counselling rooms to meet with a nurse.
I thought it was ingenious that we had the nurse's intervention to recall my medical history, instead of having to do the routine verbal vomit only when we saw the doc, which would hold up the already long line of patients outside.
After about 15 minutes of giving the nurse a lowdown on our past (at which point the nurse even noted in the document file that my hubby was away in Singapore, "just so the doctor would know at a glance." How efficient!), we were told to wait to be called in to see the doctor.
I think that probably took like two hours, and by then my sister was already hideously impatient.
I would say that Dr Wong couldn't have been a better fit of a doctor for me. He looked extremely calm, very patient, and incredibly decisive (perfect for the indecisive me!).
I was ushered into an adjoining room for a scan from below (the dreaded magic wand scan), and was told that I had a small cyst on one of my ovaries, and a larger unknown blob in the other. Doc says it could possibly be a leftover egg shell from a previous ovulation. To determine what was what, I was given some progesterone tablets to induce my period (hadn't had mine in almost two months anyway). I don't think I had ever taken one of those before and thought they were the most useful things ever! I was asked to be back on Day Two/Three of my period, which is standard procedure for fertility scans, but this time, because I could count on the pills to bring on the blood, I could instantly set a date for the appointment. A week later, woohoo!
Doc diagnosed me with PCOS, decisively, and surprised me by asking if I've ever been on Glucophage, a type of diabetes medication. Apparently, women with PCOS do better in fertility with the meds, which encourages better quality eggs and reduces instances of miscarriage. How interesting! No serious side effects too.
He also said that some women are born with a harder-than-usual ovarian shell (I hope I got that right), which makes it difficult for a mature egg to break out of. Hence, ovulation only happens four to six times a year, instead of the normal 12.
Doc said if I had come to him two years ago, he would've suggested a laparoscopy drilling surgery, which would enable me to conceive naturally, easily. "But I'm sure you're tired of all that surgery stuff by now," he said. True enough, as planned, I bypassed the IUI option and said we were serious about IVF.
Doc nodded in a very understanding manner and within minutes, had charted up an IVF plan for me. In all, he said it takes about 16 days from treatment to embryo transfer, which is when I would be unofficially pregnant. 16 days! It could all happen next month!
But now, to make sure that I wasn't carrying a cyst...
And so we left with a happy heart at about 1.45pm, but only after waiting around for the nurse to get my meds and seal the appointment date.
My sister then treated me to an icky rabbit-food (raw cucumbers, carrots, quinoa sushi!) like lunch in Bangsar, but that's another story altogether :)

TGIF
Hello there! Welcome to my brand new blog!
I am not yet a mommy, but as my blog title suggests, I hope to one day be able to hear others say: "There's Mei and baby!"
My baby, or babies, of course.
Since Sept 2013, I've undergone about four fertility treatment cycles, from timed intercourse with Clomid and later FSH injections to one IUI.
To mark the new year of 2015, we decided to go straight for IVF, and I'm currently a day away from my egg retrieval procedure. I'm super nervous!
In the coming posts, I hope to share all that I remember about my journey to conception (one day soon I hope!) so that if you too are in a similar situation, you'd know what's tried and tested and swoop right in to take action.
Fingers crossed that everything will go as planned! Wish me luck...I can't wait for the day till you get to meet Mei and baby :)
Just Mei for now.
